Spiral premiere at the Sound + Science 3.0 symposium

Performance in Los Angeles

Dr Terry Tafoya Said:
"Listen, stories go in circles, they don't go in straight lines." It helps if you listen in circles, because there are stories inside and between stories, and finding your way through them is as easy and as hard as finding your way home. Part of finding is getting lost, and when you're lost you start to open up and listen".

For the Quimbaya-Kumba indigenous peoples of Colombia, the spiral symbolises thought. It serves as a guide, much like a snake that coils and moves forward.
Understanding our origins helps us navigate our future path.
Inspired by this symbol and the Aymara aphorism that encourages us to walk toward the future while keeping our eyes on the past, this Performance//Ritual presents an experimental composition for the Electronic_khipu_ and the Kanchay_yupana//. it includes sound portraits of living natures that sketch tomorrow using the pigments of the past.

I had the enormous privilege of premiering my performance Spiral in the beautiful Fowler Museum courtyard as part of the Sound + Science 3.0 symposium presented by the UCLA Art|Sci Centre.

This performance will also be presented as the closing of the exhibition of the Electronic_khipu, displayed alongside video documentation of the khipumancy performance and an original 14th-century khipu at UCLA's Fowler Museum. This exhibition was part of the UCLA Art|Sci Center + Lab's "Atmosphere of Sound: Sonic Art in Times of Climate Disruption," presented by the Getty as part of PST ART: "Art & Science Collide."

In this way, this performance closes a cycle and starts a new one

It is dedicated to all the people and beings in the world who have been forced to abandon their homes by war, colonisation and greed.

No one is illegal on stolen land

Atmosphere of Sound: Sonic Art in Times of Climate Disruption

Exhibition at Fowler Museum in Los Angeles

Patricia Cadavid’s Electronic_Khipu is an instrument for interaction and experimental sound generation, operated by weaving knots with conductive rubber cords into which sound compositions are encoded. This instrument is based on an Andean quipu, the ancient textile “computer” used for the processing, encryption, and transmission of information in knots and cords of cotton and wool. KHIPUMANCY is a Performance Documentation Video that documents the performance of KHIPUMANCY, presented at the Ars Electronica Festival in 2021. In this collaborative performance, Patricia Cadavid and Paola Torres Núñez del Prado explore the interplay between tradition and technology, performing with their respective khipus: the Electronic_Khipuand the ML: Knot() Khipu. Together, they reimagine the Andean khipu as instruments of sound, storytelling, and cultural resilience.

I am excited to share that my Electronic_khipu will be on display alongside video documentation of the khipumancy performance and an original 14th-century khipu at UCLA's Fowler Museum. This exhibition is part of the UCLA Art|Sci Center + Lab's "Atmosphere of Sound: Sonic Art in Times of Climate Disruption," presented by the Getty as part of PST ART: "Art & Science Collide."

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Victoria Vesna, Anuradha Vikram, Ivana Dama and the UCLA Art|Sci Center team for their trust and support in making this project a reality. Their patience and perseverance have made it possible for my work to be showcased next to an original khipu, something I never imagined would happen. Thank you!

"Presagio" at Sound Campus - Ars Electronica Festival

Performance

I come back to Linz as "AndinA" to present "presagio"

The clouds may move, but the sun will always be there.
In this sound ritual, from the roots,
from what we are
we will find, in an unknown horizon
intentions and causes...
touched by the light
tied by fear
drawn by smoke
to breathe them deep
from what we are
trance.

On September 4th at 19.30h I will be at Sound Campus-Sonic Fever edition curated by Andreea Vladut and Gabriela Gordillo as part of the exhibition of the kunstuniversität Linz for the Ars Electronica Festival 2024.

Thanks to the team for their kindness:

RADIOCHISPAS o agitaciones sónicas

exhibition

From April 21 to 23 ESTACION TERRENA in Bogota, will be participating in the ARTBO fair Weekend circuit with *RADIOCHISPAS o agitaciones sónicas* a curatorship by Juan Pablo García Sossa📡⚡✨.
Welcome between 11am and 8pm during the three days.

I'm very happy to be able to participate with "pichqa" in these sonic agitations at Estacion Terrena, accompanied by a lineup of incredible artists.
"pichqa" which translates to the number five in Quechua language, corresponds to the knot of this new experiment, a small traveling khipubox.
When you put on the headphones you can hear a “hechiza” frequency that sings with the 555 chip, capacitors, resistors and other electronic junk the number five, written on a conductive rubber string, so that when you stretch it or even touch it, the khipu perceives the energy and combines it transforming the action into sound.
Many thanks to Juan Pablo García Sossa for his support, patience and for carrying this khipu to Bogotá :).

LASER TALKS

Talk and performance

[English version]

Interdisciplinary strategies as research, educational and innovation practices are a reality of our times. Today we accept as a very positive value the impulse of interaction between the different specialties of knowledge and techniques. This network of interaction opens up the possibility of establishing unexpected creative connections, which are key to imagining and building livable futures. The doctoral stage is the academic access route to research practice, and therefore, establishing, making visible and formalizing these interdisciplinary guidelines in these early stages of research not only shows a commitment to these dynamics by the new generations, but also offers us the possibility of understanding the evolution and positions of those who today exercise interdisciplinarity as a projection on their future, and therefore on what is common and shared. However, the practice of interdisciplinarity also presents particularities, fragmentations and obstacles. In this LASERTalk we will analyze the characteristics of interdisciplinary work through a debate with two pre-doctoral researchers, Amanda Ramón Constantí (Architect) and Patricia Cadavid (Artist), where we will analyze under these open and interdisciplinary premises the concepts and practices of the creative, the collective, the technological, the critical and the political, ... building a multiple view that understands knowledge and research from the position of alliance and collaboration.

Tawa  is the live performance of the eponymous album released in January 2021 by Vienna-based netlabel Smallforms. https://smallforms.bandcamp.com/album/tawa

In the Andean cosmogony, “Tawa” (four in Quechua) symbolizes two opposite balances that complement each other and reach harmony. Dichotomy and contradiction, stillness, and chaos, that in the year that summed up four (2020) knotted acceptance among uncertainty.

The Andean Khipu is an information processing and transmission technology used since pre-colonial times. This tangible interface is one of the first textile computers known, consisting of a central wool or cotton cord to which other strings are attached with knots of different shapes, colors, and sizes, encrypting different information. The system was widely used until the Spanish colonization, which banned and destroyed many of these devices.

In the performance is played the Electronic_Khipu_an instrument inspired by the traditional Khipus made for the interaction and generation of live experimental sound by weaving knots with conductive rubber cords. Their sounds are embraced with textures reminiscing about the Andes from a prepared charango and immersive rhythms that bring back the present moment.

From a decolonial perspective, Tawa_is an homage to the Andean technologies, continuing the interrupted legacy of this ancestral practice in a different experience of tangible live coding and computer music. The artist takes the place of a contemporary *khipukamayuq* (Khipu knotter), weaving four sound Abstractions that knot the past with the present, creating the balance to face the future.
